Lovingly restored heritage house on Church Street

This 230-year-old house has recently been renovated by the current owner, blending heritage features with modern comfort.

The large front door opens into the Voorkamer (the lounge), then leads to the open-plan kitchen and dining area. The tastefully designed kitchen features ample cabinets and is equipped with all the essential appliances for modern living.

History of the house
Built in the 1790s by Magteld Smith, a renowned anti-slavery crusader, who came to Tulbagh to assist with teaching “the slaves and the heathen”. Roodezand-Hulpgenootschap van de Suid-Afrikaansche Zendlinggennotschap (Roodezand Help Society of the South African Missionary Society) was founded in this house on October 10, 1799. The meeting was chaired by Rev. M.C. Vos and included members of the London Missionary Society.
Magteld Smith’s H-shaped house, built of mud shortly after 1796, has changed very little over the years, despite later additions like an iron roof, veranda, and modern garage. After the earthquake, the gable and thatch roof were restored to match historical photos, drawings, and paintings of this important house.
