Vredehoek Alert: Important safety information for homeowners and investors

As a homeowner or investor in the City Bowl, it is imperative to know what is happening in your neighbourhood, whether you reside there or rent your property out. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, there has been an increase in people on the streets which has unfortunately led to an increase in crime in the area. Vredehoek and Devil's Peak have experienced the highest reported monthly crime rate in 11 years last month.

In light of the recent DPV Watch (Devil's Peak, Vredehoek Neighbourhood Watch) article published, which alerts homeowners and residents to the alarming increase in crime being experienced in the area, we asked them for their top tips and pointers to avoid becoming a victim of these crimes.

Don't become a victim of crime - DPV Watch's top 5 tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings while you walk or drive in the neighbourhood. Don't walk with earphones in your ears, use your cell phone or display valuables.
  • If there is a stranger outside your home, or you feel that someone has followed you and it's not safe to park and exit, drive around the block and look around. Call for assistance or hoot to attract attention if there is a clear danger.
  • Make sure you lock your door as soon as you get into the car, even before placing the key in the ignition.
  • Don't leave any small valuables close to unattended open windows and doors. They can be snatched very quickly.
  • Don't assume you are safe on a first or second-floor balcony and can leave doors and windows open.

We encourage all residents to join the DPV Watch to have access to the communication network which will ensure the assistance of SAPS, security companies, DPV patrollers and members that are neighbours as well. Sign up at www.dpvwatch.co.za or email: contact@dpvwatch.co.za

If you have any friends, family or acquaintances in the area who you feel may benefit from these tips, please feel free to send this email on to them.
